A postmortem on the moderation fiasco
Thank you to the mods for removing the attacking moderator account from the mod team and reinstating my account. That's a good start.
Hopefully my actions, and the ban that resulted, can serve as a constructive learning example, particularly for Roger Ver. I was banned by the new super-duper "no censorship" guy for doing the exact disruptive stuff that got George and others banned. Turns out that moderation by removing the people disrupting free speech isn't censorship.
Rewinding the events of the last day or so, what we see is that George Donnelly successfully conducted a takeover of this sub, using Roger Ver as a "useful idiot." Fortunately it seems a lot of damage has been unwound and it seems like Roger realizes that he made a mistake, but it's also clear that Roger neither understands nor accepts responsibility for his part, which is very significant.
u/pyalot has a good synopsis of events which I don't want to waste time repeating but which I want to update.
- It should be clear now that althornton2462 is either a George Donnelly sockpuppet or is his agent
- It should be clear now George's ban from this sub was perfectly justified. Surely we all agree that trying to hijack the sub ought to be the final word. However, Roger does not seem to have grasped the fact that George was obviously behind all these hijinx, because Roger recently updated that he doesn't have a problem with George. That, in itself, is a problem. Why can't Roger understand that he got seriously played by George?
- What is less clear is the status of the account BitcoinIsTehFuture (which has blocked me). That account was instrumental in the attack on rbitcoincash, and yet it continues to support althornton2462 even after everything that's happened, and continues to argue on behalf George's unbanning. BitcoinIsTehFuture continues to be a top mod here. That's an issue. It would be reassuring if BitcoinIsTehFuture could renounce their claim that ShadowOfHarbringer and Thomas Zander hijacked the sub, and issue a statement indicating that they now realize that they made a mistake supporting the attacker. Until that happens I think BitcoinIsTehFuture needs to be watched closely, because the account might be compromised.
- Similar story for the account btcxio and a few others. If you're still supporting George / althornton2462 / etc and attacking ShadowOfHarbringer and Thomas Zander for taking what turned out to be the correct course of action, that's an issue.
- I think there needs to be introspection on the role of Roger Ver in this sub. Roger says he doesn't have time to moderate, and acts butthurt that he has to be involved whatsoever as a moderator. SO STEP DOWN. The action of impulsively firing the entire mod team, with no involvement or discussion whatsoever, was entirely inappropriate. Roger owes the moderators he fired an apology. But what he did is the opposite of that. He's still acting butthurt, as though they (and not he) caused this drama. Roger seems pretty clueless about his role in the attack.
