A voting system weighted by Bitcoin holdings
Hello everyone, I'm here seeking some advice. I'm currently developing a website that uses Bitcoin signatures to verify wallet balances, allowing users to vote (or endorse) candidates based on their holdings. The concept is simple: users submit their wallet address and choose a candidate to support. The website then generates a plaintext message containing the candidate's name, which the user signs with their private key and returns the signature to the website. Once verified, the candidate receives a number of votes equivalent to the balance of that address. There's no need for registration, and no transactions are involved.
The reason I'm building this site is that I believe Bitcoin's narrative may extend beyond just being a store of value. By showcasing the address, plaintext, and signature, Bitcoiners can rally together to wield political influence. Large endorsements backed by significant balances will be hard to ignore. Although the evolution of this process may be complex, if Bitcoin endorsements gain recognition, I believe we could be on the path to world peace. Sometimes I even think this could represent the future of democracy. The underlying implication of "one person, one vote" is that brute force can rule, and while I respect that, I think proof-of-work-based voting might be a more rational alternative. Its implication is that those who provide what society needs should set the rules, and the more experienced and senior (usually) people should have more weight. In my vision, this website acts as a beacon, a signal sent from veteran Bitcoiners to guide the next generation.
However, when my father learned that I had found a team and started development, he expressed serious opposition. He believes the site won't make money and could cause trouble, as he doesn't want me caught in the storm of politics. When he discovered that I also plan to support voting on China leadership, he became outright angry.
I understand his concerns. This is indeed a thankless task; I could be sued, I could be imprisoned. But to not act out of fear would be like refusing to invent the lightbulb for fear of offending candle makers. Every time I think about how this could potentially push human civilization to the next level, I can't let go of the idea. Uniting Hodlers around the world to save humanity—this is a potential that no other asset in history has ever reached.
I know Bitcoin will do just fine without this application, but I still want to give it a try. If I succeed, we will save the world in the name of Bitcoin. And if I fail, at least it will serve as a foundation for future success.
