Best Non-Hardware Wallet

I am looking to take my BTC off the exchange, but I do not want to buy a hardware wallet because:

• It is expensive (I do not have a lot of BTC yet, so I do not think that it is worth it
• dependent on - well hardware, which could break or get lost

I would rather have my BTC secured by a key that I can store in a Password manager and use an open source software wallet.

Any suggestions?
