Bitcoin Mining Energy Use

I am discussing with someone who thinks BTC is not sustainable. The person argues that, even though currently bitcoin mining needs less energy than traditional banking, this would change in case of a potential mass adoption when more people/institutions would start mining. Is this assumption correct?
