Blew up my demo account twice before risking my first $100. tbh best decision I made as a beginner
Honestly I’ll admit it. the first time I clicked the futures tab I had no clue what I was looking at. I’ve strictly been a spot buyer since late 2024. I didn't know the difference between isolated and cross margin, and I legitimately thought 'reduce-only' was some sort of fee discount. naturally I wanted to try trading perps, but I was terrified of getting wrecked.
so basically I ended up trying a demo account (I used bydfi since they load it with 50K in fake money and only need an email to start) just to see how the mechanics worked. week one, I maxed out the slider on a random altcoin and got liquidated in under an hour. week two I tried to be smart but didn't set a stop loss. went to sleep and woke up to another blown account. it wasn't until week three that I actually forced myself to learn proper position sizing, limit orders, and how to set a TP/SL without emotionally chasing green candles.
Once I finally survived a week without zeroing out the fake account, I deposited $100 of actual money. My first real futures trade? I think I made a grand total of $8. the next one I lost $12. But the PnL wasn't the point. the point was that my hands weren't shaking because I finally understood the interface and the actual risk I was taking.
If your relatively new and feeling the FOMO to touch futures, don't pay your tuition to the market in real money right away. find an exchange that lets you trade paper first and make your stupidest mistakes there. it definately changes your psychology when you finally go live.
