Could SmartBCH be replicated as an avalanche subnet?

I have been researching Avalanche subnets, and they seem to do basically the same thing as SmartBCH- proof of stake network that can have its own base token.

It seems to me that the limiting factor in both cases is the need for a bridge from BCH to some representation of BCH on the other network. If you had atomic swaps between AVAX and BCH, you wouldn’t even need a bridge.

Is there a reason not to use Avalanche as a way to add smart contract functionality to BCH? Asking mainly because I am looking for a new project to work on, and wondering if this would be worth pursuing.
