How I stored my private key for 4 years unencrypted
Hello. I was recently chatting with a friend about our wild bitcoin ride from the days of paying 0.5 btc for some coffee capsules and how now it’s just too expensive to use it like a currency; when he said this subreddit might be interested in how I took my bitcoin to what I considered ‘cold’ storage. So how did I store my keys? I was looking for a way to take ownership of my keys and used a bitcoin paper wallet generator. I ignored all the warnings, I didn’t use any encryption but just used the wallet generator; I then realised I didn’t have a working printer so I saved it as a pdf file and stuck it in my personal Google drive folder. That is where it remained, untouched, for around 4 years. I saw some posts in this sub a few months back about paper wallets having their coins taken and I took action! I was glad to find everything as I had left it and had no real problems getting my btc back; aside from the address being very old and considered legacy: the fees were pretty high! This story is probably one of total idiocy, of luck; or perhaps the steps I took were ‘good enough’ : you can decide that. I wondered if anyone else had stored a number of coins in this way? The crypto world does seem quite obsessed with key storage and frankly I think some of it is overkill. Finally if anyone wants some advice from this it is that you should know how you’ll access your keys/coins in a hurry ( I checked access control and other folks in my life knew how to get the wallet if needed ).
