Seed: I still don't understand how it works

I use a few well known wallets. Recently downloaded also Blockstream. Ok now what happens if for instance a wallet breaks. Like a malware or just a sofware discrepencies make it hard to withdraw your coins and it happens that the main developpers left 2 weeks ago so... it make take time until someone release a fix. Do I stand a chance in retrieving my coins if I use those seed words in Electrum for instance or every seed is tied to a specific wallet model?
