Total newb to Bitcoin need specific help regarding Russia.

Hi all my wife is Russian and needs to return to Russia for a several weeks to handle some family affairs. Just getting there from the USA is a logistical nightmare, (forget a direct flight), and as for transferring money… no chance. She needs to take a substantial sum (in the tens of thousands to settle funeral matters for her late mother), and I was thinking is having her take the money in the form of bitcoin a viable option? What is the best way of buying it, transporting it and the best way , if any, of converting that Bitcoin into local currency when she gets there? Any help so gratefully received.
