Whats the real inflation rate and how do we know?

Ive recently heard that real inflation rate is somewhere like 8-12% or above, which has changed my outlook on investing quite a bit. Is that really correct? Ik that the methods of measuring inflation have been updated in controversial ways in the past decades.
