Why have tx fees increased in the past week?

I keep an eye on Transaction Fees as a % of Total Block Reward as an indicator of how fees may be impacting the current price.

We've gone from appr 2% to almost 10% since the month started. While this is not unusual, it is usually caused by something causing increased network activity or activities demanding higher mempool priority. I expect this to generally increase over time, but this doesn't feel like gradual adoption.

I'm curious if any of the community is aware of recent developments that might be causing this? I'd love to hear other's thoughts on the matter
